The Guild Echorec 1A is a fantastic example of Binson's legendary magnetic drum echo design, built in Italy during the 1960s. Distributed by Guild for the American market, these units were fitted with standard 1/4" jacks in place of the European Geloso connectors, making them particularly convenient for use in American guitar rigs. Unlike traditional tape echoes, the Echorec uses a rotating magnetic drum and multiple playback heads to produce warm, atmospheric repeats with a distinct character all its own.
It's a sound that has become synonymous with Pink Floyd and other legendary artists of the era. Featuring multiple echo settings and the distinctive green "magic eye" indicator tube, these units offer a rich, organic sound that's difficult to replicate with modern effects. A fascinating piece of vintage effects history, and a great alternative to more conventional tape echo designs!
It's worth emphasizing that this particular unit is in superb condition, about as clean as vintage gear gets before being considered mint. It also includes a live-in case for safe and convenient transportation.
Internally, the wiring has been updated to improve long-term reliability, as the original wiring insulation was known to deteriorate over time. One electrolytic capacitor has also been replaced. The unit was recently calibrated and is ready to find a home in a studio or guitar rig near you!
