The late '70s marked an exciting period for Marshall with the introduction of the master-volume JMP models. Little did they know that the 2203 and 2204 circuits would help lay the foundation for the next evolution in guitar amplification: what we now know as "high gain." Not long after, these same circuits would carry over into the JCM800 series, becoming a defining part of early '80s rock tone.

Much like the early JCM800s, the original "Master Model" 2204 amps are highly sought after for their distinctive sound. Many players even prefer these earlier examples, thanks in part to the lower-voltage Drake 1202-164 power transformer, which delivers a slightly smoother response compared to the higher-voltage versions that followed. Regardless, this particular amp is pure classic rock bliss, delivering that unmistakable Marshall sound you hear in your head when you think of a JCM800 Or Master Model!

Internally, the filter capacitors have been replaced, along with two minor modifications. A capacitor has been added to the first preamp stage, while a 250pF capacitor has been added to the treble tone stack, helping tame some of the amp's natural brightness. These changes are subtle enough that most players likely wouldn't notice much difference, other than the fact that this amp sounds fantastic! Both modifications could easily be reversed to return the circuit to stock, or you can simply enjoy the ride! See photos for further details.

Cosmetically, this amp is in superb condition for its age, showing minimal signs of previous wear aside from a small nick in the Tolex near the top rear of the cabinet.
