This 2020 Gibson Explorer carries one of the company’s most recognizable body shapes in a clean Natural finish that puts the grain of the mahogany body front and center. Originally introduced in 1958 alongside the Flying V and Moderne as part of Gibson’s futuristic “Modernistic” series, the Explorer went from commercial failure to one of the defining silhouettes of hard rock and heavy music by the late 1970s and beyond. Its angular design still feels distinct decades later, though the guitar itself remains rooted in Gibson’s familiar set-neck construction and dual humbucker layout. A comfortable mahogany neck and rosewood fingerboard pair with Gibson Burstbuckers that deliver the thick midrange and clear top end expected from an Explorer. Hardware and appointments stay simple throughout, keeping the focus on the shape and sound that made the model a favorite among players ranging from Allen Collins to Matthias Jabs and The Edge. This example remains a clean modern production Explorer.
