Gibson SG Standard 1961, Cherry

1961 was the year Gibson reinvented the Les Paul into something faster, lighter, and altogether more dangerous-looking, and this SG Standard is a fantastic example of that first generation of double-cutaways to leave the factory. At 7.0 lbs it's feather-light in hand, with that slim .81"-.91" mahogany neck carving out the fast, low-slung playing feel that made these instruments an instant hit with players who wanted more speed than a Goldtop could offer. The Brazilian rosewood board and all-original electronics keep this one honest under the hood, with pickup readings in the 7.4-7.6K range confirming untouched, period-correct pots and windings. Its history is worn openly rather than hidden: a well-executed cracked heel repair and a back-of-neck respray speak to a guitar that's been played and cared for rather than shelved, and while the repro Klusons are currently mounted, the original tuners ride along in the case pocket for a simple return to all-original spec. Presented in very good condition with a reissue case, this is a genuinely playable, sixty-plus-year-old slab of early SG history; the kind of guitar that made this body style famous in the first place, ready for the next player to put some more miles on it.
