This 1998 Gibson Custom Shop 1959 Les Paul Standard received a Historic Makeover in 2019, bringing the instrument much closer to late-1950s specifications through an extensive series of modifications. As part of the process, the neck was removed and reset using hot hide glue, a procedure performed on pre-2013 guitars during this level of restoration. The top was re-carved to vintage-correct contours, and the neck was reshaped to a 1950s-style “C” profile. A Brazilian rosewood fingerboard was installed with the proper binding ledge and inlay routing, then fitted with cellulose nitrate inlays modeled after original 1950s examples and refretted.
The guitar was fully refinished using aniline dyes and unplasticized nitrocellulose lacquer in a vintage-correct finish. A Vintage Patina treatment was also applied, introducing weather checking and subtle aging details across the instrument. As a final step, the serial number was re-stamped using a 1950s-style typeface. The result is a carefully reworked Custom Shop Les Paul that combines a late-1990s Historic platform with an in-depth restoration aimed at period-correct construction and appearance.
